About the role

Optics Manufacturing Engineer to develop advanced manufacturing processes for high-precision molded optics with external suppliers, from prototype through volume production, operating within Apple’s hardware supply chain and acting as a technical bridge among optics and display module teams, process development, and vendor partners.

Responsibilities

  • Precision Molding Process Development: Develop manufacturing processes for high-precision molded optics with external suppliers; lead process implementation from feasibility through qualification and volume production readiness; use Moldflow, NX, ANSYS or similar for tooling design modeling and manufacturability analysis.
  • Tooling Design & Manufacturing: Drive tooling design, tolerance budgeting, and manufacturing with vendors; collaborate on diamond turning, CNC machining, and optical compensation strategies to achieve required optical surface quality and form accuracy.
  • Metrology Development & Establishment: Lead metrology development; collaborate with suppliers on equipment/fixture bring-up, SOP assessment, and GRR analysis; define optical inspection criteria, boundary samples, and inline metrology strategies across build phases.
  • Failure Analysis & Corrective Action: Lead end-to-end failure analysis on molding defects and optical performance shifts; use 8D/CAR methodologies for root-cause identification and corrective actions to improve yield and reliability.
  • Supplier Technical Management & Quality Closed-Loop: Serve as Apple’s primary in-region technical representative at molding and module assembly vendors; audit vendor processes, drive DOE, enforce quality and process controls; manage production readiness across development phases.
  • Communication & Coordination: Regularly communicate technical status, risks, and recommendations to engineering and program management; align components, module integrators, and system assembly partners.

Qualifications

  • MS or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Opto-Mechanical Engineering, Plastics Engineering, Material Science, Optics, or related discipline with 2+ years of related experience; or BS with 6+ years of related experience.
  • 6+ years of hands-on experience in high-precision injection molding for optical applications.
  • Familiarity with Moldflow analysis, tooling design, tooling manufacturing, and tolerance budgeting; working knowledge of diamond turning, CNC machining, optical metrology, and compensation techniques.
  • Proficient in optical metrology methods and instrumentation for molded optics; ability to orchestrate failure analysis to root causes and drive corrective actions.
  • Proven experience directing component suppliers, module integrators, and contract manufacturers; able to audit vendor processes and enforce quality controls.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills; ability to work across disciplines.
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills; able to articulate technical issues to internal teams and external vendors.
  • Good project management skills; ability to manage multiple workstreams and priorities; independent with strong follow-up.
  • Frequent travel up to 70% for vendor engagements and build activities.
