About the role

Backend Engineer role focused on building and operating Spotify's Lakehouse foundation to enable Iceberg workflows, with responsibilities spanning development, adoption, and platform health across GCP, Kubernetes, and BigQuery.

Responsibilities

  • Build and evolve the lakehouse: foundations to read/write Iceberg tables from MVP to production-grade platform.
  • Drive adoption: migrate data pipelines onto the new stack with tooling, standards and hands-on support.
  • Own BigQuery at Spotify scale: manage reservations and capacity, build monitoring and anti-pattern detection, develop tooling like the BigQuery MCP server.
  • Keep the platform healthy: participate in weekly on-call rotation, debug production issues spanning storage formats, catalog APIs, Kubernetes reconciliation, GCP IAM and BigQuery internals, and automate recurring toil.

Qualifications

  • Solid experience building and operating backend services in production with Java or Scala.
  • Comfortable on GCP and Kubernetes; ability to read kubectl output, reason about IAM and quotas, work with CRDs and operators.
  • Experience with Apache Iceberg or JVM-based processing frameworks (Spark, Beam, Flink) or cloud data warehouses (BigQuery, Snowflake, Databricks).
  • Systems thinking and ability to connect multi-layer problems across the stack.
  • Ownership mindset for production reliability and ability to support thousands of users.
  • Clear written communication and disciplined asynchronous collaboration across US and EU time zones.
  • Commitment to code quality, including AI-assisted code.
