About the role

CPU Performance Engineer focused on CPU micro-architecture within the CPU Architecture and Performance Team, working on next-generation iPhone, iPad, and Mac CPU architectures with emphasis on branch prediction, prefetchers, prediction schemes, and CPU pipelines; involves data-driven analysis, modeling, and collaboration with CPU designers to identify bottlenecks and opportunities for improvement across multiple product categories.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze single-threaded and multi-threaded workloads to identify bottlenecks and opportunities for improvement.
  • Collaborate with CPU designers in micro-architecture and RTL to assess feasibility of ideas through modeling, refine ideas and model correlation, and seed new ideas.
  • Maintain and improve the simulation environment to enable data driven decisions and boost team productivity.
  • Investigate areas for improvement in branch prediction, code/data prefetchers, and novel prediction schemes; contribute to CPU pipelines optimization.
  • Collect data and measurements to validate or rule out ideas.
  • Work across existing and new product categories to understand performance impacts.

Qualifications

  • BS degree
  • 3+ years of relevant industry experience
  • MS or PhD in Electrical or Computer Engineering or Computer Science
  • Experience with CPU architecture and micro-architecture
  • Experience in performance and/or power simulation environments
  • Coding experience including object-oriented programming with C and C++
  • Experience in scripting languages such as Perl or Python
  • Understanding of common data structures and algorithms
  • Knowledge in software design patterns
  • Familiarity with SIMD and vector architectures
  • Knowledge of OS internals and compiler technologies
  • Comfortable in an environment of uncertainty and able to walk through ambiguities
  • Communication, influence and negotiation skills
