About the role

Database Engineer positioned to maintain and optimize a fleet of PostgreSQL databases across baremetal, AWS, and Kubernetes for Apple’s IS&T infrastructure, with on-call support and performance tuning in a high-volume, mission-critical environment.

Responsibilities

  • Design, configuration and maintenance of fleet of Postgres databases under Data Services
  • Interact with application teams to understand requirements and suggest optimal database solutions
  • Administer production, QA, and development database infrastructure
  • Provide database architecture and design solutions
  • Handle database infrastructure setup, configuration, upgrades/patching, monitoring, and troubleshooting
  • Build automation scripts for database infrastructure
  • Measure and optimize system performance, including capacity planning and forecasting
  • Participate in evaluation, design, and development of new technologies and features for highly scalable distributed databases
  • Performance benchmarking between versions or between database technologies using pgbench or similar tools
  • Manage databases deployed across cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, AliCloud) and Kubernetes
  • Possibly participate in 12*7 FTE/L3 on-call rotation
  • Awareness of AI tolling and MCP servers
  • Knowledge transfer and collaboration across business and technical teams
  • Ensure security best practices for PostgreSQL

Qualifications

  • MS in Computer Science / Engineering or Equivalent
  • 8 - 12 years of experience supporting PostgreSQL databases in a high-volume, customer-facing environment
  • In-depth understanding of PostgreSQL architecture and engine internals
  • Strong experience in PostgreSQL optimization and performance tuning (execution plans)
  • Deep understanding of MVCC in PostgreSQL
  • Ability to perform major/minor version upgrades and migrations with near-zero downtime
  • Experience configuring and supporting replication (logical, physical, active-active)
  • Experience PostgreSQL installation via source or RPM
  • Strong knowledge of PostgreSQL parameters and tuning for performance, throughput, resource utilization
  • Experience with on-call support and RCA for outages
  • Experience implementing PostgreSQL security best practices
  • Background in building/administering large-scale infrastructure with high transaction volumes
  • Able to manage user administration, permissions, and RBAC
  • Able to implement standard backup methodologies (pg_dump/restore, online, incremental, differential)
  • Proficient in SQL and at least one scripting language (Shell, Python)
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Ability to thrive in fast-paced environments with tight timelines
  • Aptitude for independently learning new technologies
  • Hands-on experience with AWS (RDS/EC2), GCP (GKE), and AliCloud services
  • Creative problem-solver with multiple solution approaches
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Ansible) is a plus
  • Certifications: Kubernetes (CKA) and AWS Solutions Architect Associate are a plus
