About the role

SRE-focused role to own reliability, performance, and operability of Apple's data and ML platforms (AiDP Data Platforms). Build, operate and harden large-scale distributed data platforms on the Cloud, with emphasis on SLOs, incident response, capacity planning, and reducing toil across multiple teams.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and harden big data platform powering analytics, reporting, and AI/ML
  • Drive down MTTR, automate operational toil, tune performance and cost
  • Run capacity planning and root-cause production incidents
  • Communicate with engineers and non-technical partners; work across teams to keep platform running at Apple’s standard
  • Operate and support critical, large-scale distributed systems in production
  • Maintain and improve CI/CD pipelines, IaC, and multi-cloud service architectures
  • Troubleshoot and perform performance analysis in complex production environments
  • Contribute to open source projects or operate across multiple public clouds
  • Debug distributed frameworks (Spark, Flink, Kafka Streams, Trino, Iceberg) and multi-tenant Kubernetes clusters
  • Utilize workflow/pipeline tools (Airflow, dbt) and apply data modeling/warehousing concepts
  • Debug Kubernetes/Spark production issues with a continuous-improvement mindset

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience operating and supporting critical, large-scale distributed systems in production
  • Scripting/programming ability in Python, Go, Java, Scala, or Bash
  • Deep understanding of reliability principles (SLIs/SLOs, alerting, on-call, incident postmortems)
  • Hands-on experience with Spark, Flink, and MPP engines (Trino, StarRocks) including performance tuning
  • Proficiency in Kubernetes/Helm at scale; experience with CI/CD (GitHub Actions, Jenkins); IaC (Terraform, Pulumi); multi-cloud environments
  • Strong troubleshooting and Unix/Linux fluency; excellent communication and problem-solving skills
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in CS or related field
  • Experience with open source contributions or multi-cloud operations
  • Operational knowledge of Spark, Flink, Kafka Streams, Trino, Iceberg; multi-tenant Kubernetes experience
  • Experience with Airflow and dbt; understanding of data modeling/warehousing
