About the role

Legal Product Builder role within Carta Law, focusing on building AI-powered legal products by translating legal judgment into AI-enabled workflows, evaluation criteria, and prototypes in collaboration with engineers and legal professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Build AI-powered legal products alongside engineers and product managers: Bring deep legal expertise into the product development process, helping turn complex legal work into scalable, agent driven experiences
  • Translate legal judgement into systems: Break down legal processes like contract review and compliance into the decisions, rules, workflows, exceptions, and escalation points an AI agent needs to navigate
  • Teach our agents what "good" looks like: develop examples, evaluation criteria, test cases and feedback loops that help our legal agents produce accurate, useful, and trustworthy work.
  • Evaluate and improve agent performance. Test against real world scenarios, identify where the reasoning or outputs fall short, diagnose failure modes, and partner with engineers to improve them.
  • Prototype new legal capabilities: use AI tools directly to experiment with prompts, workflows, and agent behaviour, moving from an idea to a working prototype before or alongside engineering to shape what we build next

Qualifications

  • You're a lawyer with 4+ years of substantive training and experience, whether that's Big Law, in-house at an asset manager or PE firm, or comparable legal practice or within a legal-adjacent role.
  • Demonstrated track record of product thinking and identifying where legal workflows break down and proposing or building improvements.
  • Comfortable sparring with engineers on AI product development and translating legal judgment for technical teams.
  • Strong written communication and autonomy.
  • Nice to have: direct commercial contract negotiation experience; prior time at a legal tech company or hybrid legal/product role; familiarity with contract automation, document intelligence, or negotiation tooling; founder experience or building something from scratch.
