CPU Performance Architect, Platform Architecture

About the role

CPU Platform Architecture team focuses on improving single-threaded and multi-threaded CPU performance across Apple products by exploring microarchitecture, ISA, performance and power modeling, and workload analysis. This role concentrates on memory subsystem optimization, memory latency tolerance techniques, and cache/memory micro-architecture within next-generation iPhone, iPad, Mac, and server CPUs.

Responsibilities

  • Define and optimize CPU and cache micro-architecture with a focus on memory subsystems
  • Identify performance bottlenecks in memory systems and evaluate improvement ideas
  • Collaborate with CPU/SoC designers in micro-architecture and RTL to assess feasibility through modeling
  • Refine ideas, improve model correlation, and seed new concepts
  • Analyze single-threaded and multi-threaded workloads across product categories to find bottlenecks and opportunities
  • Maintain and improve the simulation environment for data-driven decision making
  • Contribute to productivity improvements for the CPU architecture and performance team

Qualifications

  • BS degree
  • Experience in CPU and SOC architecture and micro-architecture
  • Experience with performance simulation environments
  • Object-oriented programming experience in C/C++
  • Experience in scripting languages such as Perl or Python
  • Knowledge of memory latency tolerance techniques or CPU memory subsystem (pre-fetching, caching policies)
  • 20+ years of relevant industry experience
  • MS or PhD in Electrical or Computer Engineering or Computer Science
  • Understanding of common data structures and algorithms
  • Familiarity with SIMD, vector, or accelerator architectures
  • Familiarity with MP performance
  • Comfortable in environments with ambiguity and uncertainty
  • Experience in a research-driven environment
