Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) — Enterprise Technology Services
About the role
SDET role within Apple's IS&T Enterprise Business Application group, delivering a next-generation Product Information Management (PIM) platform to enable product innovation across hardware, software, and services. Hands-on, cross-functional position focused on building and testing large-scale on-premise and cloud-based enterprise PLM solutions, with emphasis on test automation, data integrity, and collaboration with engineering and business teams.
Responsibilities
- Partner with engineering, infrastructure, site reliability, program management, and partner teams to define engineering specs and testable acceptance criteria.
- Participate in design and architecture reviews to surface testability gaps, observability needs, and risky integrations before coding.
- Act as quality advocate in agile ceremonies: refine stories into verifiable behaviors, estimate test effort, and uphold definition of done.
- Craft test plans, test cases, and automation for complex full-stack PLM workflows; coordinate execution across functional, integration, regression, and release cycles.
- Own automation architecture in TypeScript: build and maintain a typed, reusable UI and API test framework on Playwright Test with advanced patterns (fixtures, page/service objects, typed clients, parallel/sharded execution).
- Maintain production-grade test code: strict TypeScript configurations, lint/format gates, generated API contracts from schema, and peer-reviewed PRs.
- Apply test pyramid: push coverage to unit/service layers; reserve end-to-end UI for critical journeys.
- Develop service-virtualization and mocking (Playwright network interception, WireMock stubs) to test downstream integrations without partner environments.
- Engineer PLM test data management (fixtures for item/BOM/change-order, lifecycle states) with API/ITK/SOA-driven setup and teardown.
- Automate and validate asynchronous/distributed behavior (Kafka, workflow engines, scheduled jobs, ETL) with deterministic assertions and bounded waits.
- Verify end-to-end data integrity across PLM, PIM, and downstream systems; validate migrations and cutovers.
- Integrate automated test suites into CI/CD (Jenkins and Rio); manage toolchain, dependencies, and build caching for fast feedback.
- Manage on-demand, isolated test environments; maintain reporting and traceability (Playwright traces, Allure dashboards, coverage mapping).
- Design and execute non-functional testing (performance, load, soak); validate security, access control, accessibility, cross-browser and cross-platform behavior.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in quality assurance or software engineering.
- Proficient in developing test plans and automation strategies for intricate full-stack applications.
- Experience testing and automating browser-based applications across platforms using Playwright (TypeScript), Selenium, or equivalent.
- Experience testing and automating enterprise applications such as Siemens Teamcenter or an equivalent PLM system.
- Hands-on experience automating and testing asynchronous and distributed systems.
- Strong programming ability in TypeScript — typed interfaces and generics, async/await, clean code practices, code review, and Git-based workflows. Automation codebase is TypeScript; Java used on services/integrations under test.
- Experience with API and contract testing (REST/SOAP, JSON/XML) using Playwright's API client, Postman/Insomnia, or equivalent, including JSON Schema validation.
- Working knowledge of SQL for test data setup and backend verification.
- Experience integrating automated test suites into a CI/CD pipeline.
- Depth in the Playwright Test ecosystem — custom fixtures, projects/sharding, network interception, trace viewer, visual comparison, component testing.
- Extensive knowledge of back-end development technologies, particularly Java and related frameworks (Spring/Spring Boot, microservices).
- Working knowledge of browser technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React) and accessibility semantics.
- Proficiency in relational databases (Oracle or Postgres).
- Depth in Siemens Teamcenter — Active Workspace, BMIDE data model, SOA/ITK services, workflows, TcIF.
- Experience with PLM data migration and cutover validation — ETL and reconciliation at scale.
- Experience with message brokers/streaming platforms (Kafka via kafkajs, JMS/ActiveMQ) and ETL/data pipeline testing.
- Experience with performance and resilience testing of enterprise workloads.
- Familiarity with test management and defect tracking, including requirement-to-test traceability and Allure reporting.
- Self-motivated, proactive, meticulous with strong written and spoken English communication.
