About the role

Self-directed software engineer role focused on designing and developing the control plane of Apple’s security platform. Collaborate with Data Plane and cross-functional teams to build high-performance, scalable distributed systems for enterprise security, anti-abuse engines, and related platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Data Engineering Leadership: Lead architectural design and implementation of scalable, low-latency batch and real-time data pipelines to aggregate, process, and analyze massive volumes of security data.
  • Platform Engineering Leadership: Architect, deploy, and scale highly resilient micro-services and platform infrastructure supporting mission-critical, customer-facing anti-abuse engines.
  • Culture & Ownership ("You Build It, You Own It"): Set architectural standards and take end-to-end accountability for system health, performance, deployment automation, and operational readiness.
  • Business Continuity & Resilience: Architect robust automation, auto-healing, chaos testing, and CI/CD pipelines for business continuity and rapid disaster recovery.
  • AI Enablement & Developer Velocity: Drive adoption of AI-assisted development tools and modern software engineering practices to accelerate velocity and code quality.
  • Data Architecture: Design and optimize large-scale distributed NoSQL, relational, and in-memory data architectures for real-time risk evaluation and high-frequency lookups.
  • Observability Strategy: Define and implement enterprise-grade observability, telemetry, and alerting to identify performance, data quality, and security issues.
  • Mentorship & Collaboration: Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineers; collaborate with security researchers, data scientists, and senior leadership to drive long-term strategy.

Qualifications

  • B.S. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field, or equivalent professional work experience.
  • 5+ years software development experience.
  • 2+ years Java experience, including concurrency, memory management, and performance optimization.
  • Proficiency in OOP, data structures, algorithms, and software design patterns (e.g. GoF).
  • Solid understanding of advanced JVM internals (garbage collection, memory allocation, JIT, JNI).
  • Experience in API design and implementation: REST, gRPC, GraphQL; contract-first design (OpenAPI/Swagger, Protobuf); API versioning, gateway patterns, rate limiting, backward compatibility.
  • Experience with relational (Oracle, Postgres, MySQL) and NoSQL (Cassandra, MongoDB) databases; schema design, query optimization, performance tuning.
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure); proficiency in IaC, containerization, orchestration (Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Track record of leading software projects as tech lead and mentoring engineers.
  • Hands-on experience with GenAI coding tools (e.g., Claude, Copilot, Codex).
  • Knowledge of networking concepts and infrastructure (HTTP/HTTPS, TCP/IP, CDN, load balancing, edge computing, DNS, Zero Trust).
  • Experience designing/shipping high-scale, high-availability, secure cloud-based distributed systems.
  • Experience with messaging (Kafka, RabbitMQ, ActiveMQ), event sourcing, CQRS, asynchronous communication.
  • Experience with caching/in-memory data technologies (Redis, Memcached, Hazelcast, Ehcache).
