About the role

Senior backend-focused engineer role within Apple IS&T Retail and Marcom Engineering, focusing on self-service developer tooling, build systems, and automated validation frameworks to support global retail engineering teams.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain robust backend services and developer APIs in Java and Python, applying proven object-oriented design patterns to ensure modularity, extensibility, and maintainability.
  • Analyze and optimize core platform algorithms, data pipelines, and distributed data structures to maximize throughput, minimize latency, and scale seamlessly with enterprise demand.
  • Author and maintain advanced automation suites that eliminate manual developer overhead and streamline local-to-cloud workflows.
  • Modernize and manage enterprise build systems and dependency graphs, slashing build times and ensuring reproducible, deterministic builds across multi-language repositories.
  • Architect containerized pipelines and deployment automation that govern the application lifecycle and enforce rigorous quality gates prior to production.

Qualifications

  • B.S. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent professional work experience.
  • 5+ years proven experience developing software in a professional capacity. Longer experience preferred.
  • 2+ years proven experience with Java, including proficiency in concurrency, memory management, and performance optimization techniques.
  • Proficiency in OOP principles, data structures, algorithms, and software design patterns (e.g. GoF), with a proven focus on implementing testable, maintainable, and extensible backend code.
  • Experience building production applications with the Spring ecosystem (e.g. Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Spring Security, Spring Data, Spring Cloud, etc.), including proficiency in dependency injection, auto-configuration, reactive programming with WebFlux, and designing microservices using Spring-based patterns.
  • Proficiency in Java web (e.g. ServiceTalk, Spring, Dropwizard, Quarkus, Micronaut, etc.) and unit testing frameworks (e.g. JUnit, Mockito, etc.).
  • Track record of leading software projects within a team as a tech lead (TL), while mentoring software engineers.
  • Hands-on experience leveraging GenAI coding tools (e.g., Claude, Copilot, Codex) to accelerate the software development lifecycle, enhance code quality, and streamline debugging and testing processes.
  • Solid understanding of advanced JVM internals (e.g. garbage collection, memory allocation, JIT, JNI, etc.).
  • Experience with complementary programming languages beyond Java (e.g. Go, Python, Ruby, etc.), including practical use for automation scripting, infrastructure tooling, data processing pipelines, and build system customizations.
  • Experience using relational and NoSQL databases (e.g. Oracle, Postgres, MySQL, Cassandra, MongoDB, etc.), including proficiency in schema design, query optimization, performance tuning.
  • Comfortable using CI/CD tools to build, test, deploy, and release containerized software applications on cloud-based Kubernetes (e.g. AWS EKS, GCP GKE, Azure AKS, etc.).
