About the role

Lead role focused on the design and deployment of islanded grids and microgrid power systems for AI compute infrastructure, driving end-to-end system design, validation, and standardization across sites.

Responsibilities

  • Own the system design basis for the islanded grid, fixing voltage levels, topology, grounding, redundancy boundaries and the repeatable block and cluster unit, with v1 and the site and block single-lines issued inside six months.
  • Treat the block as a product rather than a project, holding one standard design across sites, driving out variation and freezing design early to avoid late changes.
  • Write the internal grid code that every generator, BESS, inverter, transformer and ITR must meet, own conformance evidence before equipment ships, and own the technical content of generation and electrical equipment specifications and bid evaluations.
  • Build the model of record and own the study register, producing first-pass generation, BESS and reserve sizing and initial load flow, short circuit and transient stability results; evaluate vendor studies against it.
  • Set the stability and protection philosophy, including loss-of-largest-unit contingency, reserve policy and load shedding with compute as a participating resource.
  • Own the phasing rule and prioritised study roadmap for procurement decisions.
  • Close the loop from the field to standard, incorporating commissioning findings into revisions for faster future blocks.
  • Hire and mentor specialists in sequence: protection/HV substation engineer, EMT/modelling engineer, and operations counterpart for dispatch and switching orders.

Qualifications

  • Delivered islanded or very weak-grid power system at 100MW+ (island/remote utility, mining/LNG captive plant, OEM power systems, or islanded-systems practice).
  • Hands-on EMT modelling in PSCAD or equivalent; produced load flow, short circuit and stability results.
  • Designed around grid-forming inverter control and inverter-dominated protection.
  • Owned a system design basis used to evaluate vendors and EPC studies.
  • Experience explaining causes when an island went dark.
  • Set and enforce standards that OEMs/EPCs comply with (engineering authority).
  • Made designs that were replicated multiple times with disciplined design freeze and stable supply chain impact.
  • Worked where work happens; standards reflect installers/operators realities.
