About the role
Join the 2027 New York Times Fellowship class as an editor of video commentary in the Opinion section in New York. As a vertical video editor, you will create videos for nytimes.com and social media, acting as producer, writer and editor to conceive mobile-first journalism and new video formats. The role involves journalistic and creative judgment, collaboration with the Opinion Audience team and other journalists, with in-office work four days a week and some flexibility per guidance.
Responsibilities
- Produce, write and edit vertical videos
- Act as a host in some videos to translate journalism for off-site audiences
- Write engaging, SEO-driven social captions
- Post videos to nytimes.com and platforms such as TikTok and YouTube
- Collaborate with other journalists and editors to adapt, script and edit videos
- Work with editors on inventive on-site and social formats aligned with Opinion’s mission and identity
- Participate in training and social programs designed for the fellowship
- Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and commitment to the mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world
Qualifications
- No more than five years of full-time, professional journalism experience, excluding internships
- 3+ years of experience with creative video editing, with demonstrated success in innovative journalism in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to produce and publish short-form vertical videos on tight deadlines
- Experience in video and graphics editing with Adobe Premiere and AfterEffects
- Experience in archive producing, including using photo, video, graphics and audio
