About the role

Intern on the Private Cloud Compute Platform Data Plane team at Apple, focusing on privacy-preserving cloud compute infrastructure within the iCloud Platform. You will design, build, test, and ship features for distributed systems, collaborate with Privacy and Security teams, and gain hands-on experience in distributed systems, scalability, and privacy-focused engineering. This is a full-time internship based in London, UK, with 3 onsite days per week.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and test features for the services that make up our cloud compute platform.
  • Work in a team developing new architecture, and learn to reason about the different failure modes of distributed systems.
  • Write comprehensive tests (unit, integration, and system) and contribute through small, regular changes and code review.
  • Work with Privacy, Security, and other cross-functional partner teams to deliver the best outcomes.
  • Take part in design discussions and clarify requirements as they evolve.
  • Document your designs, and present your project and results to the team at the end of the internship.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field, with a minimum of 2 years completed.
  • Programming proficiency in at least one high-level language. Swift would be good, but other languages common in server-side ecosystems (Java, Go, Rust, C#, etc.) are valued.
  • Strong problem-solving and debugging skills, and a proven willingness to learn new technologies.
  • Familiarity with version control and collaborative development tools like GitHub and AI tools, like Claude.
  • Experience with Unix-like operating systems (macOS, Linux).
  • Great organisational and communication skills.
  • Coursework or project experience in distributed systems, networking, or systems programming.
  • Experience building or contributing to services, through projects, open source, or prior internships.
  • Familiarity with application layer protocols and API design, especially protobuf and gRPC, or HTTP REST.
  • Interest in or understanding of security techniques such as certificates, software signing, and attestation.
  • Interest in security and privacy engineering in distributed systems.
  • A self-starter who is comfortable with new technology and evolving requirements, and who is also a collaborative teammate.
