About the role

Leader responsible for building and directing the AI Safety Engineering & Evaluation function within the Human-Centered AI organization, combining software engineering, ML, evaluation science, and Responsible AI to scale safety assessment and mitigation for AI-powered experiences across Apple services.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute the technical strategy and multi-year roadmap for AI safety engineering and evaluation; build and mentor a multidisciplinary organization of engineering managers, software engineers, ML engineers, and applied scientists; establish engineering standards, review practices, and operating mechanisms.
  • Lead the development of automated, model-based evaluation approaches to assess models and product experiences for harmful content, bias, robustness, and Responsible AI risks; establish evaluation methodologies, benchmarks, and metrics; advance synthetic data generation, scenario-based testing, and automated red teaming.
  • Direct the implementation of safety evaluation workflows, model-based assessors, automated testing logic, and risk-analysis pipelines; partner with ESR to integrate safety capabilities into shared platforms; ensure data management, benchmark quality, test coverage, and continuous measurement.
  • Partner with AI/ML engineering, research, product, privacy, legal, and safety policy teams to translate safety requirements into measurable technical criteria; influence product release decisions through evidence-based assessments; communicate strategy and risks to senior stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • 12+ years in software engineering, ML engineering, applied AI, or related technical disciplines with production-quality systems experience.
  • 8+ years of engineering or applied ML management experience, including at least 3 years managing engineering managers or leading multiple technical teams.
  • Demonstrated experience building or transforming engineering organizations, establishing engineering practices, and scaling teams.
  • Strong software engineering foundation; experience guiding architecture, implementation, and operationalization of complex software/AI/ML solutions.
  • Practical expertise in ML and modern AI architectures including model development, inference, and evaluation methodologies.
  • Strong Python and modern software development practices; ability to assess tradeoffs and guide execution.
  • Proven ability to develop technical roadmaps, set priorities, manage resources, and deliver measurable outcomes in ambiguous environments.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills; experience influencing senior technical and cross-functional leaders.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, ML, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
