About the role
Health Care Assistant position at Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic (PPHP) in Yonkers, NY. Provides administrative and clinical support within the health center, with training offered for suitable candidates. Roles include front desk duties, patient flow support, laboratory tasks, patient education, and assistance to clinical staff.
Responsibilities
- Handle all front desk functions including patient reception, check-in/check-out, waiting room maintenance, and assist with patient flow and customer service
- Receive and make phone calls, handle mail and deliveries; ensure supplies are received and unpacked
- Demonstrate proficiency in electronic health record and practice management system
- Explain and assist enrollment in available entitlement programs
- Assemble paperwork and chart information for clinical staff
- Handle lab results under supervision, call patients with results, schedule returns
- Maintain electronic and medical chart functions (filing, scanning, purging, archiving)
- Comply with agency security procedures and protocols
- Participate in center efforts to meet fiscal goals related to revenue and expenses
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Complete support for patient assessment including laboratory services and testing, vital signs, examination preparation
- Educate patients on medication and surgical abortion
- Draw blood and handle specimens properly; complete laboratory requisitions
- Provide urine pregnancy testing, HIV testing, and other PPHP-approved testing
- Obtain and record patient vital signs
- Provide information on family planning methods and related services
- Conduct patient interviews and assist with medical histories, consent forms, and follow-up information
- Assist with follow-up and clerical tasks per PPHP protocols
- Perform options counseling
- Clean, prepare, stock exam rooms; sterilize instruments per OSHA and PPFA standards
- Ensure patients receive necessary care and information in a professional manner
- Assist in referrals to PPHP or community services
- Maintain a clean and efficient Center facility
- Stay informed about family planning methods and PPHP policies; request training as needed
- Participate in routine chart audits and quality assurance
- Provide support to Center volunteers as needed and directed
Qualifications
- Completion of accredited high school program or equivalent required; further education/training preferred
- Experience in reproductive health or medical services desirable
- Previous professional experience with family planning preferred
- Medical laboratory and/or counseling experience desirable; familiarity with computer databases
- Knowledge of basic patient care principles and HCA I duties
- Able to work in a fast-paced environment with attention to detail
- Strong verbal and written English communication
- Able to work evenings and weekends and at other PPHP centers as needed
- Ability to assist patients with completion of medical forms
- Commitment to efficient, customer-oriented service and PPHP philosophy
- Professional, warm, respectful, sensitive communication with patients, staff, and volunteers
- Ability to participate in a team-based approach to health care
- Spanish or other languages common to PPHP clientele preferred
- Able to work at other PPHP centers as needed
- Able to perform duties after successful probationary period
