About the role

Senior, hands-on backend engineer role focused on building robust, scalable backend systems for Surge's AI platform, with emphasis on data processing pipelines, APIs, database architectures, performance optimization, and scalable RL environment infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement efficient data processing pipelines, APIs, and database architectures capable of handling large volumes of data.
  • Optimize backend systems for speed and efficiency to improve performance.
  • Contribute to building and maintaining infrastructure for large-scale simulated environments with many concurrent agents in containerized worlds.
  • Support high-throughput model training loops and scalable environments while ensuring consistency, performance, and observability.
  • Work with a small, growing team with autonomy to own notable parts of the platform.

Qualifications

  • Experience designing and implementing robust, scalable backend systems.
  • Proven ability to tackle complex backend challenges and optimize systems for performance.
  • Interest in helping make AI models safer and more useful.
  • Ability to work autonomously in a small, growing team.
