About the role
Software Engineer at Mechanize building reinforcement learning environments for frontier AI labs to train and evaluate coding models. Own full lifecycle of RL tasks, from ideation to grading infrastructure and model evaluation, with heavy use of coding agents.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and quality-assure RL tasks (self-contained software engineering challenges) with a prompt, an environment, and an automated grader
- Own the full lifecycle of tasks: ideation, grading infrastructure, running frontier models against the task, failure analysis, and iteration
- Use coding agents heavily, directing them, evaluating outputs, and identifying subtle failure modes
- Contribute to shared infrastructure: improving build pipeline, automating QA, or building tooling for other engineers
Qualifications
- Can code in Python
- Confident working independently at a consistent pace
- Developed intuition for what coding agents can and can't do
- No prior ML or AI experience required
