Postdoctoral Research Scientist, Ocean CDR Atlas
Hybrid (Boulder, CO)$83k - $95kFull Time - Term LimitedPosted 4mo ago
About the role
Postdoctoral research position focused on developing a high-resolution Ocean CDR Atlas dataset to simulate ocean carbon dioxide removal interventions using open-source ocean models, with opportunities to publish, develop visualization tools, and engage with academic and industry collaborators.
Responsibilities
- Train in configuring and validating a mesoscale-resolving domain spanning the Pacific Ocean using CWorthy tools and workflows; design and analyze production-grade Atlas simulations; identify release locations and intervention technologies with the highest carbon uptake efficiency; assess impact of release depth, seasonality, and inter-annual variability on uptake; design and implement a public data hosting strategy including data visualization to release Atlas as a public dataset for MRV calculations; potentially establish nested submesoscale domains within the broader Pacific domain to study mixed-layer exchange dynamics at 1–10 km scales; produce one or more peer-reviewed manuscripts describing Atlas methodology and results; engage the data user community through outreach, workshops, and conferences.
Qualifications
- Ph.D. in oceanography or a closely related field
- Experience configuring, running, and evaluating ocean model simulations (ROMS, Oceananigans, MITgcm, CESM, or similar)
- Background in ocean biogeochemistry, including carbonate chemistry
- Proficiency in gridded dataset analysis using Python packages such as xarray, dask, and numpy
- Ability to work with large geospatial datasets, and familiarity with netcdf and zarr formats
- Experience with high-performance computing (HPC) environments
- Strong written and oral communication skills; ability to collaborate in a small, fast-moving research team
