Postdoctoral Research Scientist, OAE Process-Model Testbed
Boulder, CO$83k - $95kFull Time - Term LimitedPosted 4mo ago
About the role
Postdoctoral role to develop a one-dimensional OAE process-model testbed within the C-Star modeling system, focusing on alkalinity addition processes, mineral dissolution/precipitation, particle dynamics, and sediment cycling to enable rapid parameter studies and integration with ROMS-MARBL for regional MRV tools.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement a one-dimensional OAE process-model testbed within C-Star using lightweight physical representations for rapid prototyping and iteration.
- Develop a generalized representation of sinking particulate material within the MARBL biogeochemical model, including dissolution, precipitation, and sinking velocities parameterizations.
- Develop and calibrate representations of particles generated in situ by electrochemical and mineral alkalinity addition in collaboration with industry and partners.
- Run large perturbed-parameter ensembles to explore parameter space and assess uncertainty in OAE outcomes.
- Validate parameterizations against empirical datasets from laboratory and field deployments in collaboration with partners.
- Develop and/or implement a simplified model of alkalinity cycling in seafloor sediments for robust regional-scale OAE simulations.
- Implement all process formulations within ROMS-MARBL to ensure portability to three-dimensional C-Star configurations.
- Contribute to C-Star infrastructure with documentation, reproducibility, and blueprint/workplan alignment.
- Develop tutorials and demonstrations for testbed usage to aid community contributions.
- Maintain collaboration with industry partners to ground model development in practical observation reality.
- Submit peer-reviewed manuscripts detailing calibration, validation, and findings.
- Contribute to C-Worthy’s broader scientific program including field-building and community engagement.
Qualifications
- Ph.D. in oceanography, marine chemistry, geochemistry, chemical oceanography, or closely related field.
- Strong background in ocean biogeochemistry, including carbonate chemistry, alkalinity, and marine carbon cycling.
- Familiarity with marine mineral dissolution/precipitation kinetics and/or particle dynamics.
- Scientific software development proficiency in Python; experience with biogeochemical model code (Python, Fortran, or Julia).
- Ability to design systematic numerical experiments, interpret results with observational constraints, and communicate findings clearly.
- Collaborative disposition and comfort working with industry stakeholders alongside academic researchers.
