Founding Applied ML Engineer
About the role
Founding Applied ML Engineer at Wildcard, an agentic commerce optimization platform for ecommerce and retail brands. This is the first engineering hire, responsible for product engineering across the stack, applied ML systems, and customer-facing delivery in a fast-moving early-stage company.
Responsibilities
- Own product engineering across the stack and help decide what gets built, how it gets built, and what to prioritize as the market evolves.
- Build reliable AI systems, ranking, evals, attribution models, agents, and automation loops that customers can trust.
- Move between product, infrastructure, applied ML, data, and customer problems without waiting for others to define the lane.
- Work directly with customers, own product and infrastructure, and contribute to end-to-end shipping of customer-facing product.
Qualifications
- Has prior founding experience, or was early at a Seed, Series A, Series B, or similarly fast-moving company
- Strong full-stack experience and ability to ship independently across the stack
- Applied ML or data science experience, especially with LLMs, ranking, retrieval, evals, attribution, experimentation, or product intelligence
- Ability to move between modeling, analysis, implementation, and product decisions
- High-agency, self-directed, and able to turn ambiguity into shipped product
- Expert-level with AI coding tools and uses them to move significantly faster while maintaining judgment
- Strong judgment on when to use AI and when not to
- Ability to reason about model behavior, failure modes, and quality without requiring perfect data
- Willingness to wear multiple hats and work in tight feedback loops with customers
- High schlep tolerance and readiness for unglamorous work when it moves the business forward
