About the role

Controller role at 9amHealth, remote full-time in the Finance department, leading end-to-end accounting, controls, tax, and audit readiness,

Responsibilities

  • Think like an operator, design accounting to support GAAP and executive decision-making
  • Drive the chart of accounts as a strategic asset for audit-ready GAAP reporting, analytics, segmentation, and forecasting
  • Set the monthly close standard and drive fastest AI-assisted close (day 5) across AR, AP, payroll, GL, accruals, reconciliations, and intercompany
  • Lead technical accounting including revenue recognition for care model, stock-based compensation under ASC 718, and other non-routine transactions
  • Deliver decision-grade reporting (monthly/quarterly/ad-hoc) and use AI tools to draft commentary and accelerate analysis
  • Own tax compliance for federal, state, and local filings and manage external tax firm relationship
  • Lead 409A valuations and equity compliance, coordinate with legal on equity issuances and ASC 718 disclosures
  • Build internal controls and audit readiness, SOX-ready posture, workpapers, and external auditor relationship
  • Run the operating layer of finance, manage outsourced accounting relationships and progressively insource as the company matures

Qualifications

  • 8–12 years of progressive accounting experience including 3+ years as Controller/Assistant Controller/Senior Manager at a high-growth company
  • CPA strongly preferred; equivalent depth of technical accounting considered
  • Big 4 audit foundation preferred (Deloitte, EY, KPMG, PwC)
  • Hands-on ERP experience with Sage Intacct or NetSuite
  • Experience designing or rebuilding a chart of accounts with defendable rationale
  • Deep technical accounting fluency in ASC 606, ASC 842, ASC 718; capable of writing accounting memos
  • Experience with federal/state/local tax filings and sales/use tax, R&D credits, multi-state nexus, payroll tax
  • Experience managing 409A valuations and ASC 718 stock compensation; familiarity with Carta or similar equity platform
  • Healthcare/health tech context preferred (subscription revenue, pharmacy economics, value-based care)
  • Demonstrated comfort with AI tools (Claude/ChatGPT) for memos, variance summaries, and automation
  • Experience with month-end close automation tools (FloQast, BlackLine, Numeric)
  • Strong written communication; ability to present to board; hands-on and data-driven personality
  • Bonus: ERP migration/implementation experience; scaling accounting teams through outsourced-to-insourced transitions; healthcare revenue concepts; multi-state nexus; M&A/diligence experience
