About the role

Senior newsroom role to guide conflict reporting operations, lead on-field safety and security coordination, and support journalists in war zones, with close partnership to the security team and International Editor.

Responsibilities

  • Build and guide newsgathering operations: inform and make calls on assignments in security-sensitive locations with guidance from security experts.
  • Leadership Briefings: provide daily situation and staffing updates, investigate security incidents, and improve systems.
  • Establishing Conflict Bureaus: deploy to create or scale wartime bureaus, vet local infrastructure, ensure safety and journalism quality.
  • Business continuity: lead disaster recovery, evacuation planning and crisis management with business continuity.
  • Operational Security: ensure gear/training and adherence to protocols with security operations.
  • Freelancer & Evacuee Support: coordinate support with Legal and Global Operations for freelancers and staff relocations.
  • Digital Security: collaborate with information security to protect data, devices, and sources.
  • Journalistic values: uphold journalistic independence and mission to seek truth.

Qualifications

  • Experience working with journalists in conflict zones
  • Experience in a role requiring high-level operational skills and crisis management.
  • Excellent news judgment and understanding of journalistic imperatives.
  • Strong communication skills, able to brief and advise leadership with clarity
  • Strong collaboration skills, with experience across stakeholders and partners.
