About the role

Lead Mechatronics Engineer at 9 Mothers, a fast-moving defense startup building AI-powered counter-sUAS systems. Onsite in Austin, TX. Full-time role reporting to founders, bridging mechanical, electrical and robotics teams to translate software intent into precise physical motion for high-acceleration turret slewing.

Responsibilities

  • Cross-Functional Interface: Serve as the primary technical bridge between mechanical design and electrical engineering.
  • Motor & Actuator Selection: Define motor specifications based on required slew rates and turret mass, performing calculations for torque and RPM.
  • Motion Control & Tuning: Implement and tune high-bandwidth control loops (PID) for stability during aggressive, high-speed tracking maneuvers.
  • System Debugging: Lead triage of failures at the hardware-software boundary.
  • Robotics Integration: Translate tracking outputs into reliable motor commands, ensuring responsive turret dynamics.

Qualifications

  • Experience in mechatronics with high-performance motion control and motor drivers.
  • Proficiency in C, C++, or Rust for speed and direct hardware interaction.
  • Strong ability to model mechanical loads and translate them into electrical requirements.
  • Hands-on experience with scopes, CAN analyzers, and basic rework.
  • U.S. Citizenship and the ability to pass a background check.
