About the role

Senior staff editor to edit weekly Well newsletter and health & wellness reporting. Requires experience with reporters and freelancers, strong health coverage background, and ability to supervise, edit across formats, and develop provocative, evidence-based health journalism.

Responsibilities

  • Conceive, assign and edit articles, serving as a first editor on several stories per week.
  • Supervise beat reporters and develop a stable of freelance contributors.
  • Provide sophisticated second edits on stories as needed.
  • Manage the digital life of stories, including writing headlines, summaries and captions for digital presentation and promotion across platforms.
  • Collaborate with the art team.
  • Meet tight deadlines and juggle multiple priorities.
  • Demonstrate strong communication and organizational skills; be collaborative, collegial and flexible.
  • Abide by The Times Code of Conduct and exemplify Values and Behaviors.
  • Demonstrate understanding of journalistic independence and commitment to the mission to seek the truth.
  • Report to the Deputy Editor.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience as a health, science or lifestyle journalist.
  • Significant editing experience, including a deep understanding of digital publishing.
  • Experience supervising beat reporters and freelancers.
  • Science-literate with ability to parse and contextualize scientific research for a general audience.
