About the role

First VP of Finance at AirGarage, responsible for building a high-leverage finance function, owning forward-looking models, unit economics, ERP transition, cap table and investor readiness, vendor negotiations, and partnering with leadership to scale the company.

Responsibilities

  • Own the model, not just the math: Maintain and improve a driver-based, forward-looking model with scenarios and levers for leadership.
  • Live in our unit economics: Track and improve margins and P&Ls by location; analyze by cohort and region; collaborate with Operations to improve contribution margins as we scale.
  • Turn data into decisions: Build budget vs. actuals and KPI dashboards for daily leadership use (cash, runway, sales productivity, marketing efficiency, portfolio performance).
  • Upgrade our finance stack: Lead transition from QuickBooks to a scalable ERP; rationalize chart of accounts; tighten close processes; ensure clean books.
  • Cap table & equity operations: Manage Carta hygiene, option grants, refreshes, and board approvals.
  • Investor & board readiness: Maintain consistent metrics, data room, and monthly/quarterly reporting; ensure alignment of story and numbers.
  • Vendor spend & commercial rigor: Identify major cost buckets; renegotiate terms; standardize templates to scale.
  • Compensation & leveling: Collaborate on comp philosophy, leveling, annual reviews, and headcount planning.
  • Legal/G&A stewardship: Coordinate contract reviews, insurance matters, and office operations; coordinate with external counsel as needed.
  • Capital strategy & banking: Maintain cash forecasts, explore debt options, manage banking relationships, plan for audits.
  • Create leverage for everyone: Develop ROI templates and decision frameworks to help teams prioritize projects.

Qualifications

  • Built-from-scratch experience: First or early finance hire at a high-growth company; implemented systems, closed books, owned the model, led first audits.
  • Hands-on operator: Able to balance high-level strategy with detailed execution.
  • Modeling + judgment: Strong driver-based modeling, scenario analysis, and cohort economics with the ability to simplify.
  • Systems & process builder: Experience moving from QuickBooks to ERP; design chart of accounts; shorten close cycles; ensure trustworthy data.
  • Story + numbers: Clear communicator translating complexity into narratives for executives, board, banks, and investors.
  • Commercial and vendor acumen: Experience reviewing terms, standardizing templates, leading vendor renegotiations.
  • People partnership: Experience supporting compensation design, leveling, and workforce planning.
  • Bias for action: Fast, measured, shipping-oriented mindset; finance supports decisions without delaying them.
  • Order maker, not order taker: Proactively identify gaps, build models, and make recommendations.
  • Strongly preferred: multi-location or revenue-share/transactional exposure; hardware/inventory familiarity; ownership of legal & G&A; experience leading first audits; plus if involved in roll-ups or M&A.
