Software Engineer - Robotic Controls
San Carlos, CA$200k - $300kFull-timePosted 2mo ago
About the role
Engineer the foundation for NEO's whole-body control and manipulation, focusing on state estimation, kinematics, robot models, system identification, and sensor conditioning to enable safe, real-time motion and interaction.
Responsibilities
- Own state estimation, kinematics and robot models, system identification, and sensor/signal conditioning underpinning the motion stack.
- Define interfaces the motion stack relies on; ensure estimates, models, and limits are trusted by controllers and learned policies.
- Ship floating-base pose and velocity, joint state, contact, and force/torque estimation robust to sensor noise/dropout.
- Own robot models, frames, inverse kinematics, and command trajectory generation with real-time-safe APIs.
- Characterize actuators, tendons, transmissions (friction, cogging, stiffness, slack, stretch) for accurate hardware-specific models.
- Run sensor modality trade studies for state estimation and manage the path from raw sensor to trusted signal (filtering, anti-aliasing, validity checks).
- Build monitoring, limits, and fault reactions to enable safe degradation when faults occur.
- Collaborate with production and service teams for calibration/brining-up procedures across lines and new robot generations.
Qualifications
- Proven track record of shipping state estimation or control software on physical robots or comparable electromechanical systems.
- Deep experience implementing/tuning state estimators (EKF/UKF/invariant/complementary filters) against real, noisy sensor data.
- Strong foundation in rigid body kinematics, frame transforms, and inverse kinematics/dynamics.
- Hands-on experience with system identification and calibration of actuators/transmissions/sensors.
- High proficiency writing production-quality real-time C++ on Linux, with Python for tooling and analysis.
- 5+ years of relevant industry experience, or an advanced degree plus equivalent hands-on experience.
