About the role

Senior Manager to lead the Product Design team responsible for dbt Labs, reporting to the Director of Product Design. Role focuses on shaping UX strategy for dbt products, guiding AI-powered and agentic product experiences, and integrating Fivetran and dbt Labs design.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the dbt product design team, coaching designers across dbt platform and CLI-based products; own full design process from problem definition to delivery; foster a culture of high-quality work for technical users; set expectations, provide feedback, and support career growth.
  • Own UX strategy for dbt; define and drive UX strategy across dbt’s product experience; identify high-impact opportunities; align design priorities with product outcomes in roadmap planning.
  • Provide design direction for technical data products; understand domain with enough technical fluency to discuss tradeoffs with Engineering leadership; engage with data workflows, ELT, analytics engineering, developer tools, and infrastructure-oriented product experiences.
  • Shape AI and agentic product experiences; lead design strategy for AI-powered experiences; design systems that make AI assistance understandable, useful, and safe for high-stakes technical work; address dual personas (humans and AI agents).
  • Help integrate Fivetran and dbt Labs design; co-create unified product experience and design culture; drive change leadership during organizational integration.
  • Build an AI-native design operating model; operationalize AI across the design lifecycle; establish workflows, standards, and review practices; define cross-functional standards for AI-generated work with human oversight.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of product design experience and at least 5 years managing product designers.
  • Strong people management skills: coaching, performance development, direct feedback, and culture building.
  • Strong cross-functional leadership with Product, Engineering, Research, Data, Marketing, and executives.
  • Deep care for craft; leadership focused on direction, critique, strategy, and coaching rather than solo IC work.
  • Experience designing for or leading teams that design for technically complex products (ELT, data infrastructure, analytics engineering, developer tools, cloud platforms, data governance, observability, or related enterprise infrastructure).
  • Experience designing AI-powered or agentic product experiences; understanding difference between AI features, copilots, and agentic workflows.
  • Experience operationalizing AI workflows for product design teams, defining workflows, standards, and quality thresholds for AI-assisted work at scale.
  • Owning UX strategy for meaningful product areas with demonstrated influence on product direction.
  • Strong technical fluency to reason about complex systems and tradeoffs with engineering partners.
  • Experience designing for expert technical users such as data engineers, analytics engineers, software engineers, platform teams, or security teams.
