R&D Mechanical Engineering Associate focused on mechanical design, build, test, and integration of electromechanical systems to quantify seafood quality, working at the intersection of fish biology, engineering, and real-world operations in El Segundo, CA.
Responsibilities
- Own electro-mechanical design, sensor integration, and data processing and validation, from concept through build, test, and deployment in commercial processing plants
- Perform hands-on testing with fish samples in a laboratory environment, including sensory analysis (taste, odour, and visual cues)
- Conduct scientific literature reviews across fish biology, food science, and chemistry journals
- Work within a cross-functional team spanning fish biology, mechanical design, software architecture, and machine learning
- Iterate fast through design, build, and test cycles with a strong bias to action
- Collaborate to explore whether technologies like hyperspectral imaging (HSI) can be used for quality prediction
- Contribute to R&D focused design of experiments related to seafood quality optimization
Qualifications
- BS/MS in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
- Experience in CAD, machining, and fabrication
- Strong skills in robotics, sensors, embedded systems, and data analysis
- Experience or demonstrated interest in biology, chemistry, lab work, or food systems
