About the role

Sensing system architect for test across optics, electronics, embedded software, and mechanical integration. Responsible for translating sensing requirements into test cases, specifying ground support equipment, and driving sensor synchronisation, calibration, and multimodal data quality throughout the full lifecycle from prototype characterisation to in-service root cause analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Characterise EO systems: MTF, SNR, dynamic range, distortion, vignetting, and spectral response using collimators, integrating spheres, resolution targets, and calibrated light sources.
  • Characterise LWIR systems: NETD, spatial resolution, uniformity, and dynamic range with calibrated blackbodies, including self-heating effects.
  • Characterise LiDAR systems: range accuracy/precision, angular resolution, detection probability, and false-alarm rate under varied ambient conditions.
  • Specify, procure, commission, and maintain OGSE, EGSE, and MGSE with calibration traceability.
  • Run temporal synchronisation campaigns across EO, LWIR, and LiDAR; assess trigger latency, PPS accuracy, and timestamp drift.
  • Execute intrinsic, extrinsic, and temporal calibration across modalities; design multi-modal fiducial targets; assess stability after thermal cycling, vibration and ageing; set re-calibration intervals.
  • Produce first-article characterisation reports for new sensor deliveries; evaluate alternative sensor configurations for design trade-offs.
  • Develop and supervise acceptance test procedures for production units; monitor yield and initiate non-conformance as needed.
  • Assess new sensor suppliers; review datasheets and qualification reports; perform supplier qualification and act as technical contact for supplier teams.
  • Investigate fielded sensor failures; reproduce in lab; perform root-cause analysis across sensor, calibration, software, and integration; verify corrective actions.
  • Provide validated sensor models, calibration parameters, and timing characterisations to software team for sensor fusion pipeline; coordinate with Environmental and Electrical clusters for qualification sequencing.
  • Maintain test firmware/scripts in Git with proper branching and release management; produce validation records and documentation accessible to engineers.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.Sc. or B.Eng.) in optical engineering, photonics, electrical engineering (with sensing/imaging component), applied/experimental physics, aerospace engineering (sensing/avionics), mechatronics, or equivalent; MSc preferred in optical engineering, photonics, or related field.
  • At least 3 years of hands-on test engineering experience covering environmental, mechanical, or structural test; direct experience with environmental chambers, vibration testing, and physical instrumentation required.
  • Prior exposure to defence, dual-use, or regulated hardware; ITAR/EAR experience is a plus.
