About the role

Tech Lead role for Magical’s Forward Deployed Engineering team. Hands-on senior IC who provides technical leadership across multiple customer deployments, coaching, and platform improvements in an early-stage, highly technical environment.

Responsibilities

  • Take the lead on Magical’s most complex, high-risk, or technically ambiguous customer deployments.
  • Get hands-on in designing agentic workflows, writing and improving prompts, building integrations, debugging failures, analyzing system behavior, and shipping production solutions.
  • Diagnose difficult issues across customer environments, integrations, agent performance, data quality, and platform behavior.
  • Provide technical leadership across multiple customers and teams.
  • Review solution designs, implementation plans, testing strategies, and production-readiness for complex workflows.
  • Coach FDEs through technical problems and help junior team members develop stronger problem-solving, debugging, and systems-thinking skills.
  • Set an example for technical ownership, execution quality, urgency, and customer focus.
  • Identify risks, architectural weaknesses, and reliability issues before they become customer-facing problems.
  • Partner with Product and Engineering to distinguish deployment-specific issues and platform-level gaps.
  • Translate recurring customer challenges into reusable platform capabilities, internal tools, reference implementations, and technical standards.
  • Improve the team’s practices for testing, observability, debugging, incident response, documentation, and release management.
  • Help define what excellent Forward Deployed Engineering looks like at Magical.

Qualifications

  • Significant experience in software engineering, Forward Deployed Engineering, solutions engineering, systems integration, implementation engineering, or similarly hands-on technical role.
  • Experienced technical lead or senior individual contributor on complex, customer-facing software deployments.
  • Comfortable moving across the full problem space from customer workflow to debugging integrations and shipping production solutions.
  • Exceptional problem solver with ability to bring structure to unclear situations and progress with incomplete information.
  • Strong technical judgment to know when to fix a local implementation, change architecture, or escalate platform limitations.
  • Hands-on mindset and willingness to perform difficult implementation and debugging work.
  • Ability to influence and lead other engineers without formal management authority.
  • Strong coaching ability to explain what should change and how to think about problems differently.
  • Clear communication with engineers, deployment teams, and customer stakeholders under pressure.
  • Deep care for production reliability, testing, observability, and solving underlying causes.
  • Deep curiosity about AI agents, prompting, automation, and multi-agent systems; strong fundamentals and quick learning matter more than formal background.
  • Bias toward action, show-don’t-tell approach, and high agency to prioritize, decide, and unblock.
