About the role
Senior/Staff ML Engineer to lead and deploy ML solutions for Nuro’s Behavior & Planning team, turning driving data into safe, natural driving behavior across geographies and vehicle platforms.
Responsibilities
- Technical Leadership: Lead ML initiatives across the autonomy stack framing ambiguous problems, setting technical direction, and driving them from idea to on-road deployment.
- Applied ML: Design, train, and productionize state-of-the-art models across foundation/world models, LLM/VLM reasoning, reinforcement and imitation learning, generative and diffusion models, and transformer-based prediction and planning.
- Generalization & Scale: Build behavior and planning models that generalize to new cities and geographies (U.S. and global) and adapt to new vehicle platforms.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Perception, Simulation & Evaluation, ML Infra & Data, and other orgs to develop holistic autonomy solutions and align on priorities.
- Mentorship & Influence: Mentor engineers/researchers and help shape roadmaps and technical strategy beyond immediate scope.
Qualifications
- 7+ years building and deploying machine learning systems, with leadership of complex, multi-team initiatives.
- M.S. or Ph.D. in Computer Science, AI, ML, Robotics, or related field or equivalent practical experience.
- Strong foundations in ML; depth in sequential decision making, prediction, generative modeling, foundation/world models, or representation learning.
- Understanding of end-to-end ML lifecycle from data collection to deployment and onboard inference.
- Strong Python (required) and/or C++ programming skills.
- Proven ability to lead initiatives, collaborate across teams, and work independently with minimal oversight.
- Efficient and clear communication skills to align cross-functional stakeholders.
