About the role

Shopify Payments processes billions for millions of merchants across 175 countries. The Credit Risk team identifies and mitigates merchant risk before it becomes financial loss while minimizing friction for legitimate businesses. The Senior Credit Risk Analyst owns complex investigations, makes defensible mitigation decisions, and helps evolve policies, detection models, and tools to manage risk at scale, collaborating with Product, Engineering, and Data to protect Shopify while supporting a low-friction merchant experience.

Responsibilities

  • Review and investigate complex merchant accounts by analyzing business, transaction, fulfillment, and chargeback activity, then make appropriate mitigation decisions
  • Own escalated investigations for high-value and high-visibility merchants
  • Communicate directly with merchants to gather information, address concerns, and explain decisions
  • Monitor portfolio trends and assess how business models, seasonal patterns, and economic conditions affect merchant risk
  • Surface merchant and risk insights and work with Product, Engineering, and Data to improve Shopify’s tools, processes, and detection rules
  • Develop and improve credit risk policies, playbooks, and mitigation strategies
  • Use AI tools to detect threats faster and automate repetitive analysis
  • Share expertise and support the team in producing consistently high-quality investigations

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience within financial services in a risk analysis or underwriting role within a digital payments, e-commerce, or marketplace environment
  • Deep knowledge of merchant credit risk and chargebacks, with the ability to connect multiple signals into a clear risk assessment and mitigation strategy
  • Experience working with high-risk business models such as pre-sales, dropshipping, or subscriptions
  • Sound judgment and ownership when making complex, high-impact decisions in ambiguous situations
  • Clear written and verbal communication across technical and non-technical audiences
  • Curiosity about emerging risks, business models, and opportunities to improve team practices
  • Proficiency with MS Excel, Google Sheets, or similar spreadsheet tools
  • A collaborative approach to sharing expertise, raising investigation quality, and influencing cross-functional partners
  • Experience collaborating cross-functionally to develop and deploy risk policies, mitigation strategies, or detection rules at scale
