About the role

Shopify seeks a strategist to own and drive federal policy priorities within Shopify's U.S. Government Affairs portfolio. The role focuses on translating Shopify’s merchant-centric realities into policy positions, influencing federal legislation and regulatory outcomes, and ensuring the merchant voice informs Washington decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain a robust, bipartisan network of relationships with key decision-makers across Congress, the Administration, and federal regulatory agencies
  • Develop and execute strategies that align Shopify's business objectives with legislative and regulatory initiatives
  • Serve as a primary spokesperson for Shopify in high-stakes conversations with members of Congress, senior congressional staff, agency leadership, and the Administration
  • Facilitate impactful connections between policymakers and Shopify merchants, incorporating merchant perspectives into federal policy conversations
  • Manage relationships with trade associations, coalitions, and external consultants engaged in Washington advocacy
  • Coordinate with State & Local, EU, and international Government Affairs leads to align federal strategy with other jurisdictions
  • Anticipate political transitions and policy shifts to position Shopify credibly across administrations and congressional majorities

Qualifications

  • Extensive experience in federal government affairs at a senior level with a proven track record influencing legislation, regulation, or executive branch policy
  • Deep, established network across Capitol Hill with credibility on both sides of the aisle and relationships with leadership offices in both chambers
  • Working relationships across the executive branch with experience engaging technology, commerce, payments, and financial services regulators (e.g., FTC, CFPB, Commerce, White House)
  • Expertise in policy areas relevant to Shopify: technology, digital commerce, payments and financial services, small business policy
  • Ability to navigate complex, multi-stakeholder policy environments across administrations and majorities
  • Track record translating policy insights into actionable recommendations for product, legal, or business strategy
  • Fluent use of AI tools as a core work practice with a view on AI-enhanced output
  • Willingness to travel as required
  • Based in the Washington, DC metropolitan area
