Mission Software Engineer - Undersea Reconnaissance & Strike
Anduril· Maritime & Maneuver Dominance : Undersea Reconnaissance & Strike - Engineering & Operations
Washington, DC$166k - $220kfull-timePosted 1mo ago
About the role
Anduril Industries seeks a Mission Software Engineer to diagnose, reproduce, fix, and ship real-field bugs across subsystems in maritime autonomous systems. The role emphasizes cross-subsystem fluency, hands-on debugging with hardware-in-the-loop, and contributing to root-cause analysis and on-call runbooks.
Responsibilities
- Take a field-reported anomaly (sensor stopped publishing, mission faulted mid-track, data stream drifted for no obvious reason) and figure out what subsystem it's actually in - not just where it was reported.
- Reproduce it for real by replaying recorded sensor/mission data through the live pipeline, visualizing results, and avoiding guesses.
- Use per-service metrics, dashboards, and centralized logs to reconstruct system state at the moment of failure.
- Confirm the fix in a simulated environment first, with hardware-in-the-loop where needed, before deployment to real vehicles.
- Write the fix in the subsystem's native language (Rust, C++, Python, Go, etc.) with tests, through CI, and via standard versioned rollout.
- Determine whether the problem is a bug, bad config, or deployment mismatch, and fix at the correct layer.
- Document root cause and fix for every closed issue to inform future reliability and test coverage.
- Push back to owning teams when a subsystem change is required rather than patching symptoms.
- Travel 25%+ of the time.
Qualifications
- Real experience debugging code you didn’t write under time pressure with incomplete information.
- Comfort in at least two of Rust, modern C++, Python, Go to read and fix bugs (not necessarily expert in all four).
- Systems-debugging instincts: pull logs and metrics, reconstruct what happened, reproduce offline from recorded data.
- Exposure to observability tooling (Prometheus/Grafana-class metrics, Loki/ELK-class logs).
- Linux and systems fluency; bonus for declarative/immutable OS setups (NixOS-style).
- Ability to clearly write up what happened and the root cause without padding.
- Willingness to work close to hardware and sensors, even without maritime/robotics background.
- Willingness to travel 25%+.
