About the role

Senior software engineer focused on debugging, reproducing, and shipping fixes for field-reported anomalies in autonomous underwater/surface vehicle systems. Requires cross-subsystem fluency, hands-on debugging under time pressure, and ownership from anomaly to root cause through CI and hardware-in-the-loop validation.

Responsibilities

  • Take a field-reported anomaly (sensor stopped publishing, mission faulted mid-track, data stream drifted for no obvious reason) and figure out what subsystem it's actually in
  • Reproduce it for real by replaying recorded sensor/mission data through the live pipeline, visualize the results
  • Use metrics and logs to reconstruct system state at the moment issues occurred
  • Confirm the fix in a simulated environment and hardware-in-the-loop where appropriate
  • Write fixes in the actual subsystem languages (Rust, C++, Python, Go, etc.) with tests, through CI and standard rollout
  • Identify whether the problem is a bug, bad config, or deployment mismatch and fix at the correct layer
  • Document root cause and fix for every closed issue to track subsystem reliability and test coverage
  • Push back to owning team when broader subsystem changes are required rather than patching symptoms

Qualifications

  • Real experience debugging code under time pressure with incomplete information
  • Comfort in at least two of Rust, modern C++, Python, Go (read and fix bugs in them)
  • Systems-debugging instincts: pull logs/metrics, reconstruct events, reproduce from recorded data
  • Exposure to observability tooling (Prometheus/Grafana-class metrics, Loki/ELK-class logs)
  • Linux and systems fluency; bonus for declarative/immutable OS setups (NixOS-style)
  • Willingness to work close to hardware and sensors, even without maritime/robotics background
  • Willingness to travel 25%+ of the time

Skills

Required:Debugging under time pressureMulti-language debuggingObservability toolingLinux/system fluency
Nice to have:Hardware-in-the-loop / simulation testing

Benefits

  • Competitive benefits package (health, recovery, and future planning)
