About the role

Senior mission software engineer focused on debugging field-reported anomalies in autonomous underwater/surface vehicles. Requires cross-subsystem fluency, debugging under time pressure, and ability to ship fixes with tests and CI, while contributing to root-cause analysis and on-call runbooks.

Responsibilities

  • Take a field-reported anomaly (sensor stopped publishing, mission faulted mid-track, data stream drifted) and figure out the actual subsystem involved.
  • Reproduce issues in realistic conditions by replaying recorded data through the live pipeline and visualizing results.
  • Use existing metrics and logs to reconstruct system state at failure moments.
  • Confirm fixes in simulated/hardware-in-the-loop environments before deployment to real vehicles.
  • Write fixes in the appropriate language (Rust, C++, Python, Go, etc.) with tests, through CI, and via normal versioned rollout.
  • Identify whether the root cause is a bug, misconfiguration, or deployment mismatch, and fix at the correct layer.
  • Document root cause and fix for every issue closed to improve long-term reliability and assist on-call/triage runbooks.
  • Push back to owning teams when real fixes require subsystem changes rather than patching symptoms.

Qualifications

  • Real experience debugging code under time pressure with incomplete information.
  • Comfort in at least two of Rust, modern C++, Python, Go to read and fix bugs.
  • Systems-debugging instincts: pull logs and metrics, reconstruct events, reproduce offline from recorded data.
  • Experience with observability tooling (Prometheus/Grafana-class metrics, Loki/ELK-class logs).
  • Linux and systems fluency; bonus for declarative/immutable OS setups (NixOS-style).
  • Ability to clearly write up what happened and root cause without padding.
  • Willingness to work close to hardware and sensors, even without prior maritime/robotics domain background.
  • Willingness to travel 25%+ of the time.
