About the role

Hiring a player-coach Engineering Manager to grow a small team of Applied AI Engineers embedded with customer engagements, owning their trajectory and delivering production AI systems in enterprise environments.

Responsibilities

  • Grow engineers, deliberately. Have a real point of view on where each person is today and where they could be in 6 to 12 months, then aim their work at the overlap between what they're interested in, what they need to build, and what the business actually needs.
  • Ramp people properly. Learn about direct reports, pair heavily in early weeks, co-attend customer meetings, and help them grow in ambiguity-filled, high-growth tech environments.
  • Give feedback in the moment. Bi-weekly 1:1s, immediate, specific feedback and sequencing of improvements.
  • Own the technical outcome. Maintain context across all workstreams, delegate effectively but not abdicate.
  • Make the hard technical calls. Be final decision-maker on high-cost-to-reverse decisions, document the why.
  • Set the bar. Define standards for code quality, testing, review, and documentation.
  • Be credible with customers. Own the technical relationship and deliverables during deployments and in conversations with stakeholders.
  • Feed the field back into the product. Surface patterns from customer work to inform Mosaic and future deployments.
  • Hire. Participate in interviewing and shaping future team members.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years building production software, with at least 2 leading or managing engineers
  • You still write code and want to keep writing code; proficient in Python and TypeScript
  • Track record of improving engineers under management; specific examples preferred
  • Systems taste; ability to explain design trade-offs and constraints
  • Comfort operating in ambiguity and ability to navigate unfamiliar systems
  • Real product empathy understanding user workflows and adoption costs
  • Fluency with LLMs as an engineering surface (agents, tools, context, evals, AI dev tooling)
  • Direct communication with candor and kindness; strong non-technical stakeholder communication
