About the role

Welding engineer to develop, qualify, and optimize welding designs and processes for SpaceX Starship, interfacing with design-and-build teams to standardize welding practices across multiple welded assemblies.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, optimize, and qualify weld processes and parameters for multiple welding processes (e.g., electron beam, laser beam, GTAW, orbital tube welding, resistance welding, GMAW, friction stir welding, plasma arc welding)
  • Support production operations on full-scale welded assemblies and provide guidance to manufacturing engineers and welders in a fast-paced environment
  • Support design, manufacturing, and materials engineering with root cause analysis
  • Collaborate with design, tooling, automation, and development engineers to improve welded designs for manufacturing
  • Set up welding qualification test campaigns and interpret mechanical testing and NDE results
  • Work with NDE personnel to interpret weld quality and develop innovative NDE techniques
  • Develop and implement improved process control using test and NDE feedback
  • Set up automated welding solutions to drive process consistency
  • Scope out new welding technologies to improve rate, quality, and efficiency

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline
  • 1+ years of hands-on fabrication, manufacturing, or testing experience of welded assemblies
