About the role

Design leadership role for The Athletic, focusing on building and leading an AI-enabled, consumer-grade sports app with a strong emphasis on hands-on craft, strategic vision, and cross-functional collaboration. Remote role for US/Canada with some travel.

Responsibilities

  • Product vision and prototyping the future. You own the process and the design output behind ongoing strategic visioning with cross-functional leadership, driving toward decisions the exec team rallies behind.
  • A strategic voice in product direction, with real weight in the business. You partner with VP Eng, VP Data, and CPO on priorities and metrics and ensure design has a seat at the table.
  • Day-to-day craft leadership. You stay in the work: reviewing flows, prototyping in Figma, and working alongside your team.
  • AI-native transformation of the design practice. You set the direction for how design works in an AI-native world, including tools, workflows, and team structure.
  • Org leadership and performance. You build, coach, and manage a design org (~10) with clear accountability for deliverables.
  • Collaboration. You participate in The Athletic leadership team and work with other leads (engineering, product, data, marketing, commercial).

Qualifications

  • A sports fan who uses the product and actively advocates for it.
  • A design leader with hands-on craft at senior levels and recent personal work.
  • Experience leading a design organization through a step-change, ideally with AI tooling and workflow, at a consumer product company.
  • Strong, defendable opinions on what makes a great sports or habit-forming consumer product.
  • Comfort operating in ambiguity.
  • Nice to have: experience starting or running your own company or side project.

Benefits

  • base salary range $270,000 - $295,000 USD per year.
