About the role

Role for Staff or Senior Staff Software Engineer on the Product Engineering team at Harvey, leading cross-team engineering projects, building AI-enabled product surfaces and agentic capabilities, and mentoring engineers. Hybrid in NYC or SF with three days in office.

Responsibilities

  • - Bring AI to where customers work across web, desktop, mobile, embedded experiences (Google Docs, MS Word, Outlook, Slack) and API.
  • - Lead large, high-priority projects spanning multiple teams and define technical bets for upcoming quarters.
  • - Identify business-critical problems, prioritize ruthlessly, and make big tradeoff calls without slowing anyone down.
  • - Build AI-platform and AI-native capabilities (agent harness, agent building via workflows, tool calling, retrieval, memory and context management, personalization and tone, thread experience, evals).
  • - Ship systems for Harvey operation: retrieval over petabyte-scale corpora, ingestion growth, data collection across 50+ jurisdictions, government-level security.
  • - Ship across the stack (React/TypeScript, Python, Postgres); design UX and robust APIs for streaming results, long-running processes, and complex tool-calling workflows.
  • - Mentor senior and staff engineers and raise the bar for the org.

Qualifications

  • - 10+ years of experience in a product-focused software engineering role at staff level or above.
  • - Depth in full stack, backend, or agents/AI with breadth to contribute outside core domain.
  • - Experience building scalable, extensible systems supporting multiple product lines.
  • - Track record shipping intuitive products in fast-growing SaaS; strong attention to detail.
  • - Proficiency with React, TypeScript, CSS (TailwindCSS), Python; for agents/AI: hands-on in building/shipping agentic systems (agent harnesses/loops, tool use, memory, evals).
  • - Experience using AI coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, Codex) and knowledge of where they accelerate work.
  • - History of influencing engineers and leaders beyond direct scope.
  • - Strong programming and general CS knowledge.
  • - Grit; startup experience is a plus.
