About the role

Staff or Senior Staff Software Engineer on the Product Engineering team, owning and leading cross-team engineering projects, building AI-enabled product surfaces and agentic capabilities, and mentoring engineers. Hybrid role based in San Francisco or New York City with three days in office.

Responsibilities

  • Bring AI to where customers work across web, desktop, mobile, and embedded experiences (Google Docs, MS Word, Outlook, Slack), and API.
  • Lead large, high-priority projects that span multiple teams and define technical bets for upcoming quarters.
  • Identify business-critical problems, prioritize ruthlessly, and make large tradeoff calls without slowing others.
  • Build AI-platform and AI-native capabilities (agent harness, agent building and workflows, tool calling, retrieval, memory and context management, personalization and tone, thread experience, evals).
  • Ship systems enabling Harvey to function (retrieval over petabyte-scale document corpora, ingestion growth, data collection across 50+ jurisdictions, government-level security).
  • Ship across the stack using React, TypeScript, Python, and Postgres, architecting UX and robust APIs for streaming results, long-running processes, and complex tool-calling workflows.
  • Mentor senior and staff engineers and raise engineering standards across the organization.

Qualifications

  • 10+ Years of Experience (post-BS/MS) in a product-focused software engineering role at Staff level or above.
  • Depth in full stack, backend, or agents/AI, with broad ability to contribute outside primary domain.
  • Experience building scalable, extensible systems supporting multiple product lines.
  • Track record of shipping highly intuitive products in fast-growing SaaS environments; strong attention to detail.
  • Experience with React, TypeScript, CSS (TailwindCSS), Python, or related; for agents/AI, proficiency in Python and hands-on work building/shipping agentic systems (agent harnesses/loops, tool use, memory, evals).
  • Advantage: AI coding tools usage (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, Codex) and instincts for when they accelerate work or fall short.
  • History of influencing engineers and leaders beyond direct scope.
  • Strong programming and Computer Science fundamentals.
  • Grit; experience at early-stage startups is a plus.
