About the role

Whatnot is seeking a Backend Engineer to join the Seller Growth Platform, focusing on scalable, trust-driven systems that enable seller onboarding and growth while protecting marketplace integrity.

Responsibilities

  • Protecting the funnel from fraud and abuse: Developing and scaling systems for identity verification (IDV), fraud detection, and automated trust/risk reviews.
  • Balancing growth with trust and safety: Ensuring weekly seller onboarding scales without degrading buyer experience while preventing bad actors from gaining distribution or abusing incentives.
  • Building platform intelligence: Powering accurate seller identification (enrichment data, signals, and predictive LTV models) to route sellers to onboarding, incentive, and discovery paths.
  • Creating scalable infrastructure: Designing reusable trust and reputation systems, modular fraud prevention frameworks, and experimentation platforms in collaboration with Data Science and Trust teams.
  • Driving long-term seller success: Bucketing sellers by value and risk to accelerate high-potential sellers and contain low-quality or fraudulent ones before scale.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field or equivalent work experience
  • Experience building scalable systems (Python, Elixir, JavaScript)
  • Ability to work across the stack (backend and frontend)
  • Excellent product instincts and track record of shipping features quickly
  • Ability to take ownership of ambiguous areas and drive impact
  • Ability to work across multiple workstreams in a fast-paced environment
  • Knowledge of data and growth systems like notifications
  • Scalability and data pipeline experience with SQL, dbt, etc.
