About the role

Design Systems engineer role at Whatnot focusing on Whatnot Design System (WDS) across iOS, Android, and web. 2.0 evolution of tokens, components, and Figma-to-production pipeline. Collaborative design/engineering work with accessibility, theming, RTL, testing, and AI-assisted workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Build and evolve Whatnot Design System components across iOS (Swift/SwiftUI), Android (Kotlin/Compose), and web (React/TypeScript) to ensure consistent, accessible UI.
  • Own and extend design token architecture (base, semantic, component tokens) and the automated pipeline from Figma to each platform's codebase.
  • Partner daily with product designers to review specs, test component APIs, and bridge gaps between Figma and code; build tooling (Figma plugins, code connect, component playgrounds, snapshot galleries).
  • Raise quality and leverage accessibility by default, dark mode, RTL, haptics, snapshot/visual regression testing, component telemetry, and AI-assisted workflows.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience building user-facing products.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • Shipped production UI on at least two of iOS (Swift/SwiftUI), Android (Kotlin/Jetpack Compose), and web (React/TypeScript).
  • Hands-on experience building or maintaining a design system: component libraries, design tokens, versioning/migration strategies, and API design for other engineers.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration with designers (Figma, variants, properties, auto layout) and a partner mindset.
  • Attention to accessibility, theming/dark mode, internationalization/RTL, testing, and documentation.
  • Bonus: experience with Figma plugins, design-to-code tooling, Storybook/Supernova, or AI-assisted migrations.
