About the role

Senior Software Engineer on the Infrastructure Reliability Engineering team focused on redesigning Whatnot's Observability stack to scale with increasing traffic and complexity. Hands-on systems engineering across data collection, normalization, routing, processing, querying, and visualization, leveraging AI-assisted troubleshooting and open standards.

Responsibilities

  • Redesign and implement observability across the software stack from code-level data collection to visualization.
  • Collaborate with Core Infrastructure, Platform, and Developer Tools teams to build a scalable observability platform.
  • Identify leading indicators for issues before they occur and handle high-volume/low-signal as well as low-volume/high-signal data.
  • Utilize industry best practices and open standards (Otel, SemConv).
  • Combine open-source software and vendor solutions to achieve reliability goals.
  • Interface with infrastructure to improve signals for management beyond CPU utilization.
  • Correlate events from infrastructure, CI/CD, experiments, or load tests with logs and time-series data to identify what changed.
  • Provide good UX for application engineers, incident responders, and leadership; drive reliability and customer experience.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience designing and building large-scale distributed systems.
  • Experience with Python, Elixir, or Go preferred; strong engineers from other backend stacks welcome.
  • Strong understanding of observability principles (metrics, logs, events, traces).
  • Experience designing, building, and operating shared production services and frameworks.
  • Comfort in cloud-native environments (AWS or GCP) with Kubernetes and infrastructure as code.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to collaborate.
