About the role

Role focused on building and managing independent, external scrutinies of OpenAI’s frontier AI safety decisions. Leads external research partnerships, third‑party assessments, and public transparency efforts to ensure evidence informs safety decisions and is accessible to the public.

Responsibilities

  • Design and run third-party assessment programs for frontier models and safeguards, including independent evaluations, adversarial testing, and embedded auditing; define assessment questions, scope, access, timelines, and deliverables with researchers and external partners.
  • Build and manage strategic research partnerships with third-party evaluators, academic labs, and independent experts; prioritize expertise, independence, and diversity of perspectives; enable rigorous research.
  • Translate external findings into actionable safety recommendations for safeguards, deployment, product, and policy; track follow-up actions and ensure partners understand consideration of their input.
  • Collaborate with research, product, policy, and communications teams to explain evidence behind OpenAI’s safety approach; translate complex results for expert and public audiences.
  • Lead public transparency programs, including system cards, summaries of third-party assessments, and updates on significant findings and follow-up actions while protecting privacy and sensitive information.
  • Create channels for researchers and civil society to ask questions, provide feedback, and inform future assessments and transparency efforts.
  • Own program goals, milestones, dependencies, and risks across assessment and transparency work; keep stakeholders informed and resolve obstacles to execution.

Qualifications

  • Understanding of AI evaluations and measurement; ability to engage with technical teams on evaluation design and results.
  • Ability to interpret evaluation findings, including methodological limitations, uncertainty, and disagreement.
  • Experience building research partnerships and managing external stakeholders, especially academic researchers and independent experts.
  • Skill in synthesizing technical and social science research into clear executive summaries and accessible explanations for public audiences.
  • Experience delivering technical publications or public reports across multiple contributors and exercising judgment about what to share, with whom, and when.
  • Cross-functional collaboration across product, research, engineering, policy, and communications; ability to coordinate complex programs with policy partners.
