About the role

Hands-on technical leader responsible for co-designing and implementing Complex’s platform, AI, and agentic infrastructure. Focus on secure systems, proprietary tools, data foundations, and audience experiences; on-site in New York, NY or Los Angeles, CA.

Responsibilities

  • Design a coherent platform: co-design platform architecture and roadmap, deepen structured data lake, build pipelines, warehouse models, and reusable services using SQL, Python, Snowflake, and AWS; decide what to build, buy, integrate, or retire; establish standards for data quality, testing, lineage, observability, deployment; improve performance, cloud costs, resilience, and recovery.
  • Turn audience understanding into better experiences: collaborate with data scientists/engineers on segmentation, design signal capture linking interactions to data, make data accessible and trustworthy for analytics, experimentation, content strategy, and product decisions; partner with content, product, and engineering on proprietary tools and audience interactions.
  • Put AI to work responsibly: build data foundations for ML and generative AI including training/inference pipelines, embeddings, vector search, retrieval-augmented generation; test models/tools, evaluate results, set priorities; ensure data privacy and access controls with security/AI teams; embed responsible design in iteration.
  • Lead by building and teaching: stay hands-on in implementation and architectural refinement; mentor engineers, assist hiring and development, establish CI/CD, code quality, and operational reliability practices; help teams adopt tools, explain technical choices, and connect them to content strategy; translate business needs into implementation priorities and measure outcomes.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years in data engineering, software engineering, analytics engineering, or related field; 3+ years leading teams or data platform architecture
  • 5+ years with SQL and Python (complex data exploration, warehouse modeling, production data or automation workflows)
  • 3+ years with Snowflake; AWS (S3, EC2, Lambda); and Apache Airflow or Dagster/Prefect
  • Experience building scalable production data platforms and pipelines with data quality, testing, observability, and operations
  • Experience supporting ML/AI via data engineering/infrastructure; understanding of statistics, experimentation, data science workflows; working knowledge of LLMs, embeddings, vector search, RAG, and AI architecture
  • Strong systems design and communication skills for engineers and non-technical stakeholders
  • Curiosity about audience, security/data-use judgement, and willingness to learn as tools/models evolve
  • Willingness to work on-site in New York or Los Angeles office
