About the role

Senior backend engineer role focusing on building and owning back-end systems and integrations for Mozilla's Ecosystem Services, maintaining cloud infrastructure, and ensuring production reliability. Collaboration with frontend, CloudEng, UX/design, and product teams. Multiple back-end teams within Ecosystem Services with ownership of end-to-end services.

Responsibilities

  • Lead backend development, building and maintaining server-side logic
  • Take ownership of services: deploy, operate, and keep healthy in production
  • Work with CloudEng to maintain production environments (monitoring/alerting with OpenTelemetry, Sentry, Prometheus, Grafana)
  • Participate in on-call/off-hours support rotation; triage and resolve production issues
  • Periodically rotate into a support role handling releases, dependency updates, and stakeholder requests
  • Apply AI-assisted development tools to improve speed and quality while exercising judgment
  • Partner with stakeholders (e.g. front-end, platform) to ensure backend systems, APIs, and data contracts meet needs
  • Collaborate with frontend and cross-functional teams on API design and data contracts
  • Participate in code reviews for code quality and reliability
  • Participate in security and privacy reviews to meet compliance standards

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of software development experience with a strong backend focus
  • Strong experience with Python, TypeScript/Node.js, or Rust building back-end services; proven leadership on backend projects
  • Proficiency with PostgreSQL and SQL optimization, relational schema design, migrations with a query builder (e.g., Knex)
  • Hands-on DevOps experience on Google Cloud Platform (GCP); Docker-based build/deploy pipelines; comfortable deploying, operating, troubleshooting services in the cloud
  • Hands-on experience with observability/monitoring tools (Sentry, Grafana)
  • Pragmatic commitment to shipping quality work; strong engineering judgment; ownership mindset
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers and driving technical excellence in code quality, testing, and process improvements
