About the role
OpenAI seeks an Applied Risk Standards Architect to lead standards work for applied risk in AI applications, translating internal research, policies, and evaluation methods into measurable, credible standards for public trust and responsible deployment. The role sits in the AI standards and global assurance function within Global Affairs and involves external engagement with standards bodies, drafting proposals, and coordinating with technical and policy teams.
Responsibilities
- Lead the development of applied AI risk standards for mental health, youth safety, age assurance, efficacy, reliability, and privacy-related risks, focusing on evaluations and assessments.
- Turn research, internal policies, and evaluation methods into credible test methods, assessment criteria, and standards grounded in real system behavior.
- Bring emerging requirements into internal planning and clarify implications for evaluations, controls, and assurance.
- Coordinate with technical and GRC partners on assessor competence, independence, evidence access, reporting, and audits vs evaluations.
- Contribute drafting, representation, and coordination on frontier risk-management and independent-assessment standards.
- Lead assigned standards-body workstreams, negotiate proposals, and coordinate internal input with ISO/IEC, INCITS, NIST consortium, and cross-industry work.
- Maintain approvals, negotiation positions, contribution records, and handoffs so external commitments stay connected to technical owners.
Qualifications
- Technical depth in evaluation science, AI evaluations and red teaming, AI safety, or trust and safety; proven ability to translate into credible standards or assessment methods.
- Experience authoring or shaping standards, evaluation criteria, control frameworks, or normative technical contributions.
- Ability to translate safety objectives into clear requirements and define evidence to demonstrate them.
- Understanding of organizational risk-management, model and system evaluations, mitigation testing, and broader assurance claims.
- Proficiency in evaluating context-dependent outcomes and managing uncertainty without overstating benchmarks.
- Understanding assessor competence, independence, incentives, and access affecting assessment credibility.
- Ability to build consensus while maintaining technical rigor and escalate decisions when needed.
- Strong communication with technical teams, lawyers, executives, policymakers, and external standards participants.
- Ability to write precisely, exercise discretion, and move a workstream from proposal to review, negotiation, and handoff.
