About the role

Staff Software Engineer role within Coinbase's App Infra team to lead the native mobile app rewrite from React Native to native Swift and Kotlin, owning architecture, developer experience, and cross-platform synchronization during the transition.

Responsibilities

  • Own the architecture of core native app surfaces in Swift and Kotlin, defining module boundaries, responsibilities, visibility rules, and compile-time checks for a high quality, scalable codebase.
  • Stay hands-on across the team's codebases, writing and reviewing code.
  • Lead the agentic code translation workflow, implementing automated systems for recurring migration work and determining what to automate versus what requires human input.
  • Own developer experience for the native codebase, improving build speeds, local development workflows, CI/CD reliability, and documenting architectural patterns for world-class native mobile development at Coinbase.
  • Shape the dual-app agentic synchronization strategy during the transition, prioritizing high-impact outcomes and designing automation and review processes that keep native and React Native codebases in sync.
  • Become a leader in Coinbase's mobile community, defining best practices, mentoring L3-L5 mobile engineers, and fostering collaboration across teams.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of iOS or Android mobile software engineering experience (Swift/iOS or Kotlin/Android) with working proficiency in the other platform and willingness to develop cross-platform fluency.
  • Track record of shipping high-quality mobile applications at scale with ownership of architecture decisions, performance budgets, and release quality.
  • Deep understanding of mobile performance optimization (cold start, frame stability, scroll jank, time to interaction) with experience profiling across device tiers including low-end Android.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate org strategy into team-level technical execution and secure cross-team commitments on migration timelines and quality standards.
  • Experience with AI-assisted code generation or LLM-driven development workflows, with judgment on what to automate vs. what requires human review.
  • Experience improving developer experience through build systems, CI/CD pipelines, and release tooling with cross-team adoption.
  • Ability to use generative AI responsibly with human oversight to deliver business-ready outputs and measurable gains in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.
