Applied Science Manager
About the role
Lead Clipboard's Applied Science function, owning the roadmap and vision for science across the marketplace. Manage a small team of Applied Scientists, develop quantitative infrastructure (pricing algorithms, auction mechanisms, causal models, metrics, experiment frameworks), and partner with engineering, product, finance, and operations to ship models and deliver insights.
Responsibilities
- Build and lead the Applied Science function, owning roadmap and vision for science across the marketplace.
- Lead a small team of Applied Scientists and develop the function; mentor across levels and contribute as an IC when needed.
- Define key metrics, measurement approaches, and reporting for marketplace performance.
- Develop models and analytical substrates used by product and engineering teams; ship some work to product and some to internal analytics substrate.
- Decide priorities, balance production work with analysis, and assess when causal identification is required versus directional results.
- Hire and develop the Applied Science team; player-coach approach with hands-on problem solving.
- Work with engineers to transition models from prototype to production; communicate reasoning to PMs, operators, and leadership.
- Utilize toolkit including causal inference, machine learning, randomized experiments, discrete-time hazard models, auction/mechanism design, and time series analysis.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in economics, statistics, engineering, mathematics, or another quantitative field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Experience building and deploying quantitative models in applied or research settings.
- Fluency querying data directly with SQL or an equivalent tool.
- Experience designing and analyzing controlled experiments.
- 1-3 years of experience managing or leading a team.
